Somewhat confusingly, this is Book One of The Shogun Quartet, although the latest to be published I’m going straight out and buying all the others. You also get a vivid picture of the exquisite beauty and formality of the court. It’s a superb piece of writing, drawing you immediately into the culture of the last days of the Japanese Shogunate, and the power struggles within it. This book immerses you in Imperial Japan, and holds you spellbound in the arcane rules and logic of the Women’s Palace. Reading Lesley Downer’s biography, I’m not surprised – her mother was Chinese, and her father a professor of Chinese she herself lived in Japan for several years. Action Comedy Romance Darcy and Tom gather their families for the ultimate destination wedding but when the entire wedding party is taken hostage the bride and groom must save their loved ones-if they dont kill each other first. This book held me enthralled from the moment I opened it. Another problem this Shogun suffers from grand mal epilepsy, and is also mentally deficient. The world is pivoting inexorably – and the fulcrum is 15-year-old Okatsu, daughter of a samurai lord, and soon to be the consort of the next Shogun. In the Shogun’s Palace, bitter infighting is going on between lords who passionately desire to keep Japan’s closed status, and those who recognise the inevitability of change. January 1853, or the Year of the Dog, third year of the Kaei era, a yang metal year – and an armed American fleet is demanding unprecedented trade rights with Japan, and to deliver a letter into the hands of the Shogun. And as she keeps sharing her thoughts and feelings and listens to the others doing the same, her life slowly begins to change. This means telling a group of strangers everything - about her struggle with bulimia, her failed sex life, her overwhelming sense of loneliness and acute longing for a relationship. So why is she driving through Chicago fantasising about her own death?ĭesperate, she joins Dr Rosen's psychotherapy group, and through his unconventional methods, he challenges everything she thought she knew, about herself and others. Lisa Taddeo, New York Times bestselling author of Three Womenįor fans of Three Women and Everything I Know About Love comes a refreshingly original memoir about self-discovery, loneliness and love. It will make you want to get better, whatever better means for you.' 'This unrestrained memoir is a transporting experience and one of the most startlingly hopeful books I have ever read. 'Every page of this incredible memoir by Christie Tate had me thinking, "I wish I had read this book when I was 25. In my quest to do at least one new thing every year, last week I did something I never thought I’d do. Still, I do enjoy watching it for a few minutes, even though I have no idea what story the dancers are trying to tell. To be honest, the thought of spending hours at a ballet performance makes me yawn. The fantasy didn’t last long, the call of a game of handball or a tree to climb pushing it to the back of my brain. Doesn’t every little girl at one time or another dream of being a prima ballerina? Even though 99% of the time I was a cowboy hat and holster-toting die-hard tomboy, there was a moment or two – all because I read a biography of ballerina Margot Fonteyn – that I dreamt of gracefully gliding across the floor, pirouetting on my tippy-toes in my little tutu. Having said all this, Machines Like Me is no more out-and-out science fiction than Kazuo Ishiguro’s elegiac novel about clones, Never Let Me Go. Still, there’s something moving about a novelist assiduously reconfiguring history just so one good man can live. In recent books, McEwan has sometimes been too showy with his research, and Machines is one of those sometimes: His explication of the world’s revised timeline is disruptive and atonal. Ultimately, it asks a surprisingly mournful question: If we built a machine that could look into our hearts, could we really expect it to like what it sees?. Machines is a sharp, unsettling read, which-despite its arteries being clogged with research and back story-has a lot on its mind about love, family, jealousy and deceit. Yet he’s such a masterly writer of prose and provocative thinker of thoughts that even his lesser novels leave marks. It is not the first, or even the 10th, place to start reading McEwan if you’ve never encountered him before. And now they’ve got Rick, who knows nothing about Parma (not even where it is) and doesn’t speak a word of Italian. They have weird customs as well - a samurai told me off for having barbaric manners and then urinated over me! Then he ordered me to take a bath - in public! Like if a chap loses a game of ping-pong he's likely to impale himself! And their only punishment is death, usually by an extremely painful method like being boiled alive. While I am philosophically intrigued by prayer techniques that are more about presence than language, such as centering prayer, I inevitably fall asleep (all that deep breathing). The conversational style of prayer preferred by my evangelical college fellowship often struck me as too outward, too talky. Wow.: The Three Essential Prayers (Riverhead 2012) with these words: “I do not know much about God and prayer, but I have come to believe, over the past twenty-five years, that there’s something to be said about keeping prayer simple.” Reading that, I silently uttered one of the three prayers that Lamott presents as essential: “Thanks.” The notion that life-changing prayer can be simple was a message I needed to hear.
